Chang’e, the goddess of the Moon
Tempo, the old sorcerer, sits down near to Flik and Flak with his book of spells. “A long, long time ago, ten suns appeared in the sky over China, scorching fields and crops. The archer Houyi shot them down by firing nine arrows, sparing only a single sun. As a reward, a goddess gave him an elixir of immortality to share with Chang’e, his beloved wife. Unfortunately, a burglar tried to steal the elixir. Refusing to give it to him, Chang’e drank every last drop and her body floated up to the Moon. Poor Chang’e was now living far away from everyone! To make her feel less alone, Houyi would leave her favourite desserts out for her every night in the moonlight. However, in truth, Chang’e was not alone. The Jade Emperor had given her a companion for eternity: the Jade Rabbit. And, on some evenings, you can see the silhouette of Chang’e’s rabbit in the shadows on the Moon.” Tempo closes the book of spells. Flik and Flak have already fallen asleep…
Sasuke the super ninja
Tempo, the old sorcerer, sits down near to Flik and Flak with his book of spells. “During the time of feudal Japan, a lord fearing an attack asked a famous ninja, Sasuke, to set out on a mission to the enemy’s castle. Sasuke used his rope to climb over the high wooden balcony and, as stealthily as the invisible man, escaped the attention of the guards. Then, in a dark corridor, he disguised himself as a samurai so that he could attend the war council. This is how he learned that the attack would take place on the following day. As he crept out of the hall to warn his lord, he dropped his black balaclava. “The traitor!” cried the enemy warriors. Sasuke managed to escape them by doing somersaults, before jumping out of the window with a final acrobatic flourish. He landed in a small river, picked himself up and ran as quick as a flash into the night.” Tempo closes the book of spells. Flik and Flak have already fallen asleep…
Mei and the dragon
Tempo, the old sorcerer, sits down near to Flik and Flak with his book of spells. “In ancient China, a mother lived with her daughter Mei by the sea. As they were very poor, Mei went out fishing every day. Her mother forbade her from looking into the deep water, which was said to be home to a dragon’s palace. Mei obeyed her until her tenth birthday, when she looked at her reflection in the water. The dragon immediately emerged from the sea and Mei ran away. She went fishing again the next day and the dragon appeared once more. Mei held her breath. “Don’t be afraid,” said the dragon. No sooner had he uttered these words than Mei’s basket filled with fish and jewellery. And the same miracle happened again on the following days. Mei was no longer afraid. This dragon was kind and brought good fortune. After all, how lucky she was to have a dragon as a friend!” Tempo closes the book of spells. Flik and Flak have already fallen asleep…
The apprentice ninjas
Tempo, the old sorcerer, sits down near to Flik and Flak with his book of spells. “Once upon a time, on the island of Honshu, three brothers dreamed of becoming warriors. Kenzo, Kenji and Naoko trained hard and mastered the martial arts, guile and stealth. Every evening, they showed their prowess to their father, a famous ninja, in the hope that he would give them a mission. The great day finally came when sardines and mackerel disappeared from their storeroom. They had to discover who was responsible! Dressed in a black outfit and a balaclava, the boys hid near to the storeroom. The door suddenly creaked. They pounced on the enemy and lit their torch to see who had been raiding their supplies. That’s when they saw Naruta, their cat, who was stealing to feed her kittens. “Oh!” they cried, disappointed. But their father was very proud of his apprentice ninjas.” Tempo closes the book of spells. Flik and Flak have already fallen asleep…

He often played in his tree house, perched high up in a tree, watching out for the kitsune, foxes with magical powers. But alas, he never saw any. One day, when the sun was shining in the bright blue sky, rain suddenly started to fall. How strange…! Ken could see hundreds of strange lights flashing in the distance. What was happening? His heart racing, Ken clambered up into his tree house and saw a magical spectacle: a fox wedding! The kitsune, dressed in ceremonial kimonos, emerged from the mountain and crossed the village, their golden tails glistening like a thousand lights. Ken had never seen anything so beautiful! As the procession moved away, a beautiful rainbow appeared in the sky. Ken returned to his house with stars in his eyes.” Tempo closes the book of spells. Flik and Flak have already fallen asleep…
Zashiki-warashi, the mischievous spirit
Tempo, the old sorcerer, sits down near to Flik and Flak with his book of spells. “Haruki was a happy man. His inn, near to Tokyo, was prosperous. He owed his good fortune to the spirit of his house, a young boy who he loved like his own son. However, the spirit was very mischievous. One day, Haruki shouted at the boy angrily after growing tired of his mischief. The spirit was very upset and left the inn straight away. The next day, Haruki’s rice crops were destroyed by hail and his house was overrun by locusts. The travellers fled. Haruki was ruined. He absolutely HAD to find the spirit again! He searched the surrounding fields and finally found the spirit hiding at the bottom of a barrel, sulking. Haruki apologised for getting angry. The spirit promised to return to the inn and be less mischievous. Since then, Haruki’s inn has once again been full of visitors... who sometimes come across a young boy playing on a tatami.” Tempo closes the book of spells. Flik and Flak have already fallen asleep…
The cucumber thief
Tempo, the old sorcerer, sits down near to Flik and Flak with his book of spells. “In a river in Japan lived a kappa, a kind of imp that looked like a turtle. As the children were afraid of him, they never got too close to the water, so their parents felt reassured that they were safe. However, this kappa had a monstrous appetite and gobbled up the entire supply of cucumbers. Akira came up with the idea of covering them in chilli pepper. The kappa didn’t suspect a thing and ate them all up. Ooh, ouch, his mouth felt as though it were on fire! He dived into the water to soothe the burning. Akira took pity on him and threw a few cucumbers without chilli pepper into the river the next day. The Japanese have continued this tradition ever since and the kappa continue to gently scare children away so they don’t fall into the water.” Tempo closes the book of spells. One day, the Monkey King set out on a quest to achieve immortality. A grand master accepted him as a disciple and he proved to be very talented, quickly developing superpowers: climbing the clouds, transforming, running faster than a meteorite... Alas, he was also short-tempered and boastful, so the master drove him away. But he continued his wrongdoings, stealing the Dragon’s magic staff and the Peaches of Immortality. And so he was imprisoned beneath a mountain. Five centuries later, a monk was heading towards the West in search of a sacred manuscript and needed the strongest of companions for his perilous journey. Who better than the Monkey King? And so our friend was freed and became wiser.” Tempo closes the book of spells. Flik and Flak have already fallen asleep…

Alas, none of the doctors in the kingdom could find a cure for his poorly heart. The king was desperate. On a full moon night, as he walked into the Forest of Wonders, a unicorn wearing a crown of diamonds appeared near a natural spring. The king suddenly remembered that only the horn of a unicorn could cure him. He immediately rushed to capture it, but it disappeared. At that very moment, a young woman emerged from the water, smiling. The king approached her and they instantly fell in love. And, as if by magic, the king’s heart was healed. They got married the very next day. Legend has it, that a tiny spiral bump can be seen on the queen’s forehead whenever there is a full moon.” Tempo closes the book of spells. Whenever they talked, multicolored flowers and butterflies would come out of their mouths. One night, after being carried away by a storm, they found themselves in the kingdom of Noctus, the Lord of Darkness. Annoyed at being disturbed in his sleep, Noctus chased them away. The fairies ran away as fast as they could. “That was a close!” they cried in unison. How horrible! Toads were jumping out of their mouths. Noctus had cast a spell on them. To help them, the meadow Star whirled around, showering the fairies with golden dust. “Oh!” they cried. Glittering flowers and butterflies now flew out of their mouths. Dino and Zaurus began to run, but Tyranno was faster. Just as he was about to catch up with them, there was suddenly a deafening rumble. The ground shook and split into two. Dino took a giant leap, but Zaurus stayed on the other side with Tyranno. A gigantic hole separated them! Dino stretched out his tail towards his friend. Scotty was rowing furiously when the weather changed. Mist covered the loch and the surrounding area. Suddenly, a strange creature appeared with bumps down its long neck. Scotty was trembling. “Don’t be afraid, I’m Nessie and I know this loch like the back of my flipper. I’ll guide you.” Scotty followed her, feeling confident. Nessie glided through the water with ease. Eventually, Scotty could see lights. “We’re here,” smiled Nessie. “Thank you,” said the boy. The fairy Lila waved her magic wand over the cradle and said the magic words, “May you have the most wonderful life!”. The princess was surrounded by sparkles. Then it was fairy Zoe’s turn, but she was late because one of her wings was injured. Time was running out, and the queen was out of her mind with worry. Fortunately, fairy Zoe arrived just before the last ray of the sun. “May... you have... the most wonderful life!” she cried breathlessly, waving her magic wand. A bouquet of stars shot out of it. He was so impressed that he made Nicolas a knight. Nicolette would have loved to become one, too, but girls weren’t allowed to bear arms at that time. A short time afterwards, the lord was attacked by bandits. Nicolette grabbed her sling and shot a volley of stones towards them. Frightened, the scoundrels fled. How brave! Little Cloud knelt down and placed his ear against the ground. “I can hear galloping over there on the right!” Billy and Little Cloud set off in search of the sound, and found Jumper, with his reins caught up in a cactus. Billy freed him. The next day, the boy put on his cowboy boots, grabbed his lasso and went to wake up his horse. “Ready for the rodeo, Jumper?” The thoroughbred reared up with pride. The sun stone had disappeared! Without this magic crystal, which they used as a compass, the Vikings would get lost at sea and be unable to bring back provisions and treasure. A strange twinkling caught Karl’s eye. The sun stone was in a magpie’s nest. Karl returned it to Olav, the Viking chief. To thank him, Olav offered Karl a magnificent horned helmet and promised to bring him on board the black drakkar soon.” Tempo closes the book of spells. Flik and Flak have already fallen asleep…

He headed deep into the dark forest and challenged Darkwiz to a duel. He used his scepter to neutralize all of Darkwiz’s spells and, opening his spell book, said the magic words to transform Darkwiz into a tree. Alas, Darkwiz had had time to cast one final spell on the good sorcerer, who now found himself imprisoned within the pages of his spell book.” “Were you the good sorcerer, Tempo?” ask Flik and Flak. Tempo closes the book of spells and winks...
